Changelog: 0.1.0-0.4.0 (update history from 3rd August to 8th August)
I didn't post anything alongside the earlier versions of the game, so here's a list of changes made per version. Earlier versions have very brief descriptions because I didn't take notes of when each feature was added.
0.1.0 (3/8/24)
The version of the game as it was at the end of ArtFight 2024. Contains one level, one character and one music track.
0.1.1 (3/8/24)
Mobile compatibility added.
0.2.0 (4/8/24)
The original single level has been reworked into a tutorial (level 0) and a new level 1 has been added, for a total of 2 levels.
Each level now contains 3 Quavers, a new collectible.
Spikes added.
Level select menu added, along with a new music track for it.
0.2.5 (5/8/24)
Level 1 has been moved to the level 2 slot and a new level 1 has been added, for a total of 3 levels.
Camera zoom triggers added.
0.2.6 (5/8/24, not uploaded to itch.io)
Tutorial nerfed in difficulty significantly. It's usually not a good idea to make players feel like video game journalists.
0.3.0 (6/8/24)
Character selection added, with 3 characters to choose from (Staccato, 8-bit Staccato and Staccato's Evil Twin). Characters are unlocked with Quavers.
Rhythm Score introduced. The closer your inputs are on average to the beat of the music, the higher your Rhythm Score. Try to get a high Rhythm Score as an optional challenge.
Level timer added. Your best time and Rhythm Score are now displayed on the Level Select menu.
Collisions between the player and spikes adjusted to be much more forgiving.
Lots of reworks made to the code to make future updates easier.
Water now looks a little less bad as it has an animation. It's not a particularly good animation, but it's better than nothing.
0.4.0 (8/8/24): The Halfway Respectable Game Update
Two new music tracks added: "Energised" and "Get Tutorialised".
Each level now uses different music. The beat marker now adapts to the BPM of the current music.
Stone and wood tiles added. They can now be found in levels 1 and 2 respectively.
Level end screens added.
Settings menu and music volume slider added.
There is now a delay at the start of the level before the player moves, equal in length to one bar of the music.
Levels now have names.
Added a cooldown display for the player's dash ability.
The state of the music on/off button is now preserved when entering and exiting levels.
Rhythm Score is no longer affected by inputs with no effect (dives while on the ground, dashes while on cooldown, jumps after double jumping, etc).
Camera triggers added to the end sections of levels 0, 1 and 2 to make it easier to see what's going on.
Jump, dive and dash can now be buffered at the start of levels.
Rhythm score is now explained to the player in the tutorial. It'd be nicer if it were explained well but this will have to do for now.
List of challenges added to the level select screen. This will likely be replaced with a proper challenge system next update.
Fixed a bug which caused the player to instantly dash at the start of each level.
Fixed a bug where the beat marker jumped forward an extra beat each time the music looped.
Fixed an issue which caused a tile in the tutorial to render as black, which made the dash hint text invisible.
8-bit Staccato's hitbox has been moved as it was off-centre.
Fixed various other bugs.
